Searching Togetherness
Workshop in Vienna March 2024
Gaia Germana
Searching Togetherness is a three days workshohp that looks at improvisation
as an inclusive approach to dance techniques.
My need now, as a researcher in
dance field with communities, is to share strategies for being together as
peculiar individuals, professional and not professional dancers, people with or
without visible disabilities.
MY QUESTION IS:
HOW TO BUILD A POWERFUL SENSE OF TOGETHERNESS
LIKE - IN AN OPEN AND FLEXIBLE FAMILY THAT IS COMPOSED FROM VERY
DIFFERENT PEOPLE (MULTIPLE AS EVERYBODY IS IN THE SAME DAY) - TROUGH DANCE?
Dance could be a way to learn transformation and resilience. In this frame new
flexible methodologies born, sharing dance and transmission of gestures, as a
learning practice and a way to be humans. Music, images, improvisation and
composition tasks will be the stimuli we’ll share as a community in becoming.
The responses could be very different, because comes from people’s desires
and interests in a very precise moment. Sharing feelings, sensations and
reflections will be part of the work.
Let’s try to reach a performative open body condition in everyday life, for
everyone.
The work comes from Sharing Practices (Pratiche condivise) a project
started in Bologna with a series of workshops organized by MUVet association as an
open research around the theme of dance for everyone. The project wanted to
create exchange possibilities around “the body as a common ground” between
professional and not professional dancers with and without disabilities and
artists from various languages.
The idea of Pratiche Condivise came out from Danze per Capire, a research by
Gaia Germanà and Giuseppe Comuniello realized in 2014 within the 9° Festival
Internazionale di Danza Contemporanea La Biennale di Venezia, directed by
Virgilio Sieni. During the research, twenty blind people, at their first dance
experience, had the chance to meet the language of contemporary dance
exchanging experiences with professional dancers.
It was a training of listening and responding to the un-know in dance practice.
The starting point was to share a perspective that comes directly from people
who were there, in the class, a community that learned “peer to peer”, sharing
different points of views and informations inscribed in the bodies.
Gaia Germanà - dancer, teacher, cultural promoter based in Bologna (Italy) is
one of the co-founders of MUVet, an organization that promotes the circulation
of contemporary dance and somatic practices for everyone, in order to develop
new languages that will emerge from the encounter between different abilities
and skills. MUVet wants to find a meeting point between multiple languages
and working methodologies based on movement, through educational and
community dance projects and creating site-specific performances.
Gaia works as Virgilio Sieni’s Assistant Choreographer for Accademia sull’Arte del gesto (Firenze - Italy) since 2010, training and dancing with people of
different ages and abilities in performative project. Lecturer in Alma Mater
Studiorum Università di Bologna in Education Studies (a.a. 2012/2013), she is
now Guest Lecturer in Wellness, Sport and Health in Rimini (since 2022), and
Tutor for Over Limited project in Fondazione Nazionale della Danza di Reggio
Emilia with Oriente Occidente Festival (Rovereto).
